The Honourable Marshall Rothstein served as Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 2006 to 2015. The author of 100 judgements and having participated in hundreds more, his tenure at the Supreme Court left a lasting impression of the Canadian legal landscape. Mr. Rothstein’s tenure at the Supreme Court left a lasting impression in all areas of the Candian legal landscape. As a Member Arbitrator, he has a particular emphasis on cases involving complex commercial and regulatory issues. 

The Honourable Marshall Rothstein served as Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 2006 to 2015. Upon his retirement, he was publicly described as having a “ferocious intelligence” and a “legendary” work ethic by the Chief Justice of Canada. The author of 100 judgments and having participated in hundreds more, Mr. Rothstein’s tenure at the Supreme Court left a lasting impression in all areas of the Canadian legal landscape, with a particular emphasis on cases involving complex commercial and regulatory issues.

A native of Winnipeg, Mr. Rothstein attended the University of Manitoba (B.Com., LL.B.) before entering private practice with Thorvaldson, Eggertson, Saunders and Mauro (now Aikins MacAulay and Thorvaldson LLP). For nearly three decades, Mr. Rothstein developed his reputation as one the country’s leading counsel in numerous high-profile domestic and cross-border cases.

Mr. Rothstein was appointed to the Trial Division of the Federal Court of Canada in 1992, and was elevated to the Federal Court of Appeal in 1999. In 2005, he served as a member of a NAFTA Extraordinary Challenge panel involving softwood lumber.
